My fidget quilt challenge continues!  Week 3’s challenge is to make a quilt block that features three handmade textures.  You can’t just sew on some fun fur and call it a day; you need to actually manipulate your materials into a texture.  The great thing about creating texture is that you don’t have to be perfect.  Any imperfections can contribute to the organic feeling.

This is what I came up with for my block this week:

Fun with Flags, Fidget Quilt Week 3 Block | Playing with Texture while Quilting | Craftcore

As you can see, I’ve gone with a flag motif.  Do you watch The Big Bang Theory?  This is my ode to “Fun with Flags.”

Texture 1: Woven Yarn-Bomb Heart Flag.

I cut out a heart shape from pink fleece and haphazardly pierced a bunch of holes in it with snippers. I stitched a very soft fuzzy yarn through the holes. Once the base was in there, I wove the yarn in and out of the yarn layers on top of the fleece only to make the heart super dense with yarn texture. It is ultra soft!  I used used a triple-thick zigzag stitch to applique it onto my fabric flag, not worrying too much about wrinkles.  I am embracing the additional texture. I also quilted some wavy lines to simulate gusts of wind, because wow, is it ever windy!

Texture 2: Elastic Ruching Flag.

I sewed strips of elastic to the backside of my second rectangle while holding it taught. After letting to, it has satisfying gathers and wrinkles.

Texture 3: Ruffled Flag Pole.

I used my ruffler foot to make these ruffle flag poles. For my largest flag pole, I layered a looser green ruffle under a tighter blue ruffle. They are actually sewn using the same settings on the ruffler tool, one gather per one stitch, but the width of the green fabric makes them appear looser.  On the smaller flag pole, I only used one layer of ruffle so it wouldn’t overwhelm the space.  I layered it with a flag grosgrain ribbon which I stitched down with multiple lines.

If you’re interested in seeing the other blocks in this project, you can view Week 1 and Week 2. There is just one week left, then sewing them all together to make the final fidget quilt.
